NREL research indicates that Southern California peak losses may exceed 15% under certain conditions, while typical annual losses are often 5% or less. Neither figure predicts the loss at an individual property; results depend on weather, panel angle, system design, and the type of buildup present.
There is no universal schedule for every solar system. Consider visible buildup, production data, rainfall, panel angle, nearby vegetation or agriculture, bird activity, dust exposure, and the panel manufacturer’s recommendations. A decline in production can also result from shading, seasonal changes, or equipment conditions rather than soiling.
Rain may rinse away some loose dust, but it does not always remove sticky pollen, bird droppings, and bonded deposits. NREL research found that rainfall was not sufficient to remove certain types of pollen from tested photovoltaic modules. Whether rain provides adequate cleaning depends on the buildup, rain intensity, panel angle, and local conditions.
When removable dirt or debris is suppressing production, cleaning can recover some of the output lost to that buildup. Cleaning cannot correct shading, inverter faults, wiring problems, equipment degradation, temperature-related losses, or other causes of underperformance, and no specific increase is guaranteed.
Solar modules should be cleaned using non-abrasive methods consistent with the panel manufacturer’s care instructions. Methods vary by service professional, so ask the provider to explain their equipment, process, insurance coverage, and experience with your panel type.
